Super Bowl 58 is just around the corner, but the other 30 teams have already started thinking about the NFL Draft. The dates for this year's event are April 25–29 in Detroit, Michigan.
The fate of more than just the Bears, who own the first overall selection, is riding on the draft. Through all seven rounds, every team strives to grow every year.
How many selections does each club receive, then? We aren't sure, really. It also evolves annually.
The draft consists of seven rounds, and each of the 32 clubs gets one pick. This guarantees a total of 224 picks. The seven picks aren't the only way teams might end up with more or less than that; several teams swap picks.
If a club loses more key players to free agency than they sign, the league will allocate more selections to that team each season. Their "value" is based on a number of things, such as their pay, playing time, and postseason honors, among others
At the conclusion of each round in Rounds 3–7, those compensatory choices are made. There were 37 compensatory choices distributed by the NFL last year.
At this time, it is not anticipated that the Bears will get any compensatory selections. The acquisitions of Tremaine Edmunds, T.J. Edwards, Nate Davis, DeMarcus Walker, Andrew Billings, and Robert Tonyan more than make up for the notable free agents they lost, Riley Reiff and David Montgomery, according to OverTheCap.
By early to mid-March, just over a month before the draft, teams should have a good idea of how many draft choices they will have.
