Festive Holiday Muddy Buddies Recipe

Whatever you called it as a kid—muddy buddies, puppy chow, reindeer chow, or monkey munch—it's the perfect holiday treat. Chef Katie Rosenhouse presents a chocolate-coated Chex Mix recipe for a sophisticated twist on classic muddy buddies.

1 (12.8-ounce) box chocolate Chex cereal (about 8 cups) ½ cup (1 stick) salted butter 1 ½ cups bittersweet chocolate chips, divided ½ teaspoon kosher salt ¾ cup Nutella 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups confectioners' sugar, divided ½ cup chopped hazelnuts, toasted 1 tablespoon holiday sprinkles and/or metallic dragées 2 cups mini chocolate-covered pretzels

Direction

Cereal should be poured into a large bowl. Put aside for later. A small bowl should be used to combine butter, one cup of chocolate chips, and salt.

1

Heat the chocolate in a microwave or over a double boiler until it melts, and then stir it until it is completely smooth. Then, add the vanilla extract and Nutella, and stir until smooth.

2

Place the chocolate mixture on top of the cereal. To ensure that the cereal is completely covered, toss it with gloved hands or a spatula.

3

Using a large bag with a zip-top closure, place half of the cereal mixture. After adding half a cup of confectioners' sugar, make sure the container is sealed and shake it until it is completely coated.

Transfer the cereal mixture to a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper, and repeat the process with the remaining cereal.

The remaining chocolate should be melted either in the microwave or around a double boiler. Chocolate should be drizzled over the cereal mixture.

Refrigerate the baking sheet for approximately fifteen minutes, or until the chocolate has hardened. Combine the pretzels, and then serve.
