When it comes to topping ice cream or almost any other dessert, this homemade salted caramel sauce is the perfect choice because it is simple to prepare.
INGREDIENTS
– ¼ cup water (60 ml)– 1 cup granulated sugar (200 grams)– ⅔ cup heavy whipping cream (160 ml) at room temperature– 3 tablespoons unsalted butter (45 grams) cut into tablespoon-sized piece– 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract– 1 teaspoon salt or to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
Heat water and sugar in a heavy saucepan on medium. Use a larger saucepan than you think you'll need. Stir until the sugar dissolves and the mixture bubbles slightly.
1
Turn up the heat to high and boil without stirring. Boil the mixture for 4–12 minutes until it turns amber.
2
Turn off the heat and slowly whisk in the heavy cream. Be careful—the mixture will bubble up. Add butter, vanilla, and salt one at a time.
3
Transfer the caramel sauce to a dish, cool completely, and refrigerate tightly covered. After cooling and refrigerating, caramel sauce thickens.
