Today, the United States Mint announces the introduction of rolls and bags of 2023 Maria Tallchief quarters in order to pay tribute to the first major prima ballerina to come out of the United States.
The U.S. Mint's American Women QuartersTM series concludes with this quarter, which honors Tallchief's influence both on and off the stage. The initiative began last year and runs for four years, with five different designs each year.
Maria Tallchief, born January 24, 1925, was a promising dancer early on. At eight, her family relocated to Los Angeles to pursue her dance career. She became the New York City Ballet's first star in 1946 after moving there. She became a prima ballerina in a few years and transformed the profession with her devotion.
The new 2023 Maria Tallchief quarter dollars are included in three distinct goods that are now on the market. A total of three separate United States Mint facilities—the Philadelphia Mint, the Denver Mint, and the San Francisco Mint—are responsible for the production of these coins.
These mints strike the nation's circulating money, therefore Tallchief quarters from them will ultimately be pocket change, as they entered circulation today. However, San Francisco Mint quarters are manufactured specifically for numismatic reasons, like three-set rolls, making them more attractive to collectors.
On the reverse (tails side) of each new quarter, Maria Tallchief is shown in a balletic stance. "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "QUARTER DOLLAR," and "MARIA TALLCHIEF" are inscribed on the design. Tallchief's Osage name, "Two Standards," is behind her English name.
Ben Sowards, who is the Artistic Infusion Program Designer at the United States Mint, was the one who finished the artwork. Joseph Menna, who is the Chief Engraver at the United States Mint, was the one who did the sculpture.
All American Women Quarters Program issues have the same obverse design. Laura Gardin Fraser painted the George Washington picture. A portrait of George Washington was produced for his 200th birthday and considered for the 1932 circulating quarter dollar.
With an initial household order restriction of three, the two-roll sets have a product limit of 9,140 like prior program releases. Three-roll set sales are limited to 12,620 and three per household. Bag choices restrict products to 7,860 and allow 10 household orders.
With Public Law 116-330, Congress gave the American Women's Quarters Program permission. Designs commemorating Maya Angelou, Dr. Sally Ride, Wilma Mankiller, Nina Otero-Warren, and Anna May Wong were part of the series' 2022 launch, as previously stated.
