After the most powerful solar flare in six years, NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center warns of further geomagnetic impacts, including Northern Lights displays.
The agency issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch for heightened solar activity through Sunday, December 17.
Multiple coronal mass ejections from the Sun have propelled plasma particles toward Earth, according to experts.
Early indicators from the agency suggest the event could reach a 6 on the Kp index scale, which spans from 0 to 9. Previous incidents of similar scale have created green, red, and purple dancing hues from Seattle to Minneapolis and Buffalo.

If the occurrence is underestimated, southern communities may witness the northern lights. Chicago, Detroit, Green Bay, and Des Moines would see the light show in a larger solar event.
In addition to auroras, the geomagnetic storm might damage electrical lines, spacecraft, and communication infrastructure.
NOAA warned of power transformer damage and radio signal fading during a long-term incident. At latest report, NOAA's 5-point geomagnetic activity scale predicted a G2 event.
