Rebuilt Eagles defensive coaching staff gains Joe Kasper, formerly of the Dolphins

NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe reports that the Eagles hired Dolphins assistant coach and former Eagles assistant Joe Kasper as their safeties coach.

Kasper worked under new Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio in 2022 while coaching under Nick Sirianni in 2021 and 2022. He saw Fangio in Miami last year. Kasper coached defensive quality control for the Eagles under Jonathan Gannon in 2021 and 2022 and Dolphins safeties coach this year.

The Eagles brought in Kasper to complete their defensive coaching staff reconstruction after firing Sean Desai and Matt Patricia in 2023 and hiring Fangio.

Fangio's second assistant is Kasper. Former Seahawks defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt is allegedly the Eagles' defensive line coach. Karl Scott, another Seahawks assistant, was anticipated to join Hurtt as Eagles secondary coach, but he is set to stay in Seattle.

On Friday, Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported that D.K. McDonald, the Eagles' secondary coach in 2023, will join Kansas as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach. The Eagles interviewed former Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry and former Eagles linebacker and assistant coach Mike Caldwell for the linebacker position.

D.J. Eliot (linebackers), Tracy Rocker (defensive line), Jeremiah Washburn (edge rushers), Ronell Williams (nickel corners), Taver Johnson (assistant secondary), Tyler Scudder (assistant linebackers), Mike DiAngelo (defensive quality control), and Matt Leo were other 2023 defensive coaches.

Fangio may keep some, but most are anticipated to go. Fangio begins his 44th football coaching season. He was an Eagles defensive consultant at the 2022 Super Bowl. Following his collegiate football career at Baldwin Wallace in Berea, Ohio, Kasper coached at Mentor High near Cleveland. The Ohio Athletic Conference includes Sirianni's alma mater, Mt. Union, and Baldwin Wallace.

He coached wide receivers at NCAA Division 3 John Carroll near Cleveland in 2017 and was a Duke graduate assistant under David Cutliffe from 2018 to 2020 before joining the Eagles.
