The upcoming Platinum Night Signature Auctions by Heritage Auctions, slated for Jan. 3-9 in Tampa, Fla., promises to feature several exceptional pieces, including the highly anticipated “finest known” 1882 $20 Gold Certificate, Fr. 1176. Graded PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ, this rarity is expected to fetch in excess of $250,000.

The auction, held in conjunction with the Florida United Numismatists Convention at the Tampa Convention Center, is sure to draw significant interest from collectors.

Series 1882 $20 Gold Certificates were issued over 18 years, with a notable gap between 1891 and 1898 when no new plates or print runs were ordered.

This particular note, representing an “early issue,” is a scarce find, with just 8% of the total number printed falling into this category.

Alongside one other PMG 66 EPQ Fr. 1177, it stands as one of the two finest known notes from that early period, featuring one of two different brown seals.

Noteworthy for its large margins and deep wheaten gold underprint, this specimen exudes originality, as evidenced by the visible paper wave and embossing.

Also anticipated in the auction is a 1934 $5,000 Federal Reserve Note, Fr. 2221-B, in PCGS Choice New 63 PPQ, expected to command a price range of $130,000 to $150,000.

This note originates from a small run of Uncirculated examples discovered nearly two decades ago, with each note showing slight variations in margin size.

Despite not reaching full Gem grade, this example boasts full margins and a pleasing paper wave.

Among the other notable lots is an 1863 Legal Tender “Spread Eagle” $100, Fr. 167a, graded PCGS Extremely Fine 40 and estimated at $125,000 and up.
